Life’s A Dream

05-02-Dreamer 2

“You are the dreamer of the world of dreams. No other cause it has, nor ever will.”   …A Course in Miracles

This life we believe we’re living; this world we believe we’re living in, and all the bodies we believe we see, are not real. All of them are parts of a dream; nothing more than that, but also nothing less than that.

I add the nothing less because dreams are illusionary, and can turn into nightmares. And because they are illusions they can also be quite convincing when proclaiming their own reality. For that is the purpose of illusions; to cause that which is not real to seem real.

I realize how silly it sounds to some, to promote the idea that all this seemingly real experience we refer to as life is nothing but a dream,  I’m also aware of just how difficult it is to accept an idea such as this. But that in no way changes the truth of it. Until we can accept this truth, we’ll remain prone to the whims of the world we see, and we’ll continue to believe we are its victims. We’ll keep going deeper and deeper into darkness, rushing headlong into misery and fear, believing we have no control over what happens to us.

“No one can waken from a dream the world is dreaming for him… Helpless he stands, a victim to a dream conceived and cherished by a separate mind.”   …ACIM

If we ever want to relinquish the fears, the misery and the unhappiness that, most of the time, accompany this so-called life, then we absolutely must accept certain truths. It is imperative that we accept the revelation contained in my opening quote; i.e., You are the dreamer. We not only must accept that what we call life in this world is a dream, we must also accept that we are doing the dreaming. You are dreaming your dream, I am dreaming mine, and everyone else is dreaming theirs. You are not part of some one else’s dream, even though it seems as if you are.

That’s the only way we’ll ever be able to take control of our experiences as we go through this dream. Once we realize that it is a dream, and we are doing the dreaming, we’ve reached the point where we begin to see a bit of Light shining through the dark clouds of sleep. To reach this point where we become aware that we’re dreaming, is the most important lesson we’ll ever learn during this physical experience. All other learning pales in comparison to this. For if we can accept that we’re actually asleep and dreaming, then we can begin the awakening process. And eventually, let all the dreams and nightmares go, as we return to our original state of pure Joy and Love as God created us.

“Our life is not as we imagine it. Who changes life because he sleeps and sees in dreams an opposite to what he is?”   …ACIM

Most of the time when someone has a bad experience we’ll hear them say something like, Oh well such is life. It’s not true! What we see and experience during our time here on earth is not life. For life does not include all the fears, unhappiness, diseases, sickness and other negatives, including death, that are part of this physical experience. As I’ve already said, it’s a dream; an illusion; and there’s no life nor truth in it.

As the above header quote points out; we sleep and see in dreams an opposite to what we are. The Course also emphasizes over, and over again, that you are as God created youAnd God did not create negativity and fear. We did! We made these things in our dreams; they are completely of our own doing. And that is the most awesome good news you’ll ever hear. Because if we made them, and realize that we did so, then we can unmake them.

“The dreamer of a dream is not awake but does not know he sleeps. He sees illusions of himself as sick or well, depressed or happy, but without a stable cause with guaranteed effects.”   …ACIM

The above quote states that which is very obvious. when we’re dreaming, we don’t know we’re asleep. Dreams can be happy and good or they can be very bad. The quote literally tells us that in dreams the dreamer sees illusions of himself as sick or well, depressed or happy. But it’s not the truth about him. In his dream he could be very ill and frightened, but when he awakes he’s the same as he was. If he wasn’t sick and frightened before the dream, then he’s not sick and frightened after he awakes and realizes it was a dream. Even thought he may not perceive it as an illusion. that’s what it was – an illusion of himself.

The ancient Chinese philosopher, Zhuang Zhou, once said something to this affect: Once upon a time I  dreamt I was a butterfly, and then I awoke. Now I don’t know whether I am a man who dreamt he was a butterfly, or whether I am a butterfly dreaming I am a man. That’s the way it is with dreams and illusions, we don’t know who, or what, we are. We’re dreaming that we’re these little physical bodies, but we’re not sure because we keep asking who or what we are. I’d be willing to wager that there’s hardly a human on this earth that hasn’t asked those questions.

As long as we remain asleep and dreaming, we cannot know who or what we are. There’s no way to know because dreams change continually. We can be happy one moment, and down and depressed the next.

05-03-Dreaming

“Nothing at all has happened but that you have put yourself to sleep and dreamed a dream in which you were an alien to yourself and but a part of someone else’s dream.” …ACIM

This is exactly what has been taking place for most of us during this physical experience. We have been dreaming a dream, even though we’re unaware that it is a dream. We believe that our lives are completely controlled by the world around us. In other words, we think we’re no more than physical entities who are at the mercy of luck and chance. Not realizing, nor accepting, that this so-called life is a dream, we believe we are victims of random forces. And these forces leave us with no control over our lives or what happens to us – It is not true!

“There is nothing in the world which has the power to make you ill or sad or weak or frail.”  “It is impossible that you be hurt except by your own thoughts…”   …ACIM

Everything in the universe is thought; nothing exists that isn’t a result of thought. Everything you see or feel is a result of your own thoughts. All your dreams, whether they’re daydreams, night-dreams, or the dream you’re currently living, are direct results of your innermost and prioritized thoughts. Whether you believe this, or not, has no effect on the truth of it. But it does have its effect on you.

I’m going to close this post with a beautiful quote by the American author, Stephanie Lahart. She said:

“Your personal thoughts carry so much power. It’s important to be mindful of what you spend your time thinking about. Make sure that your thoughts aren’t defeating you or your purpose in life.”
