Just Say No

12-17-18-No

“There is no road that leads away from Him. A journey from yourself does not exist.”   …A Course in Miracles

The phrase, “Just Say No,” was used in an advertising campaign during the 1980s and 90s, to discourage children from engaging in drug use. But in this post  I’m going to refer to it in a way that some may not believe it can be used. In other words, what I believe we can say no to will probably not be accepted as even possible by most.

We humans have no trouble at all accepting the ridiculous, upside down and impossible idea that what God created can be sick. All we have to do is glance around at any given moment at all the sickness and misery that’s prevalent in our world to realize how true this is.

We have a couple of choices in this. We can follow one of the many roads of this world which lead nowhere except through darkness and sickness and on to nowhere. Or we can lay another course by following a different Guide. One that will lead us away from the roads of this world and on to Life and Happiness. We’re all free to choose which one we’re going to follow.

Let them be as hateful and as vicious as they may, they could have no effect on you unless you failed to recognize it is your dream. -27 VIII 10:5-6'“Think not that happiness is ever found by following a road away from it.”   …A Course in Miracles

The roads of this word are numerous, and they all seem different. Some of them will provide an illusion of happiness for awhile. But as their destination becomes clearer the illusion of happiness turns bleak and uncertain.

Others are bumpy and depressing from the beginning. Some so much so that even the destination to which they all lead looks inviting and welcoming. It matters not which one we’re on they all have the same ending, which is disappointment and nothingness.

“When God created you, He made you part of Him.”   …ACIM

John F. Kennedy once said, “Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.” It doesn’t matter what the subject is there are always legions of opinions being expressed concerning it. And the majority of them are expressed without much thought or reasoning behind them.

Once we reach that place in our awareness where we can accept the idea that we’re created Spiritual beings, and, as the above header quote implies, part of God, then to experience sickness would defy all sense of reason. Therefore, any and all opinions expressed that agree with sickness would surely be done so without, as Kennedy said, the discomfort of thought.

For to truly accept the idea we are part of God, and at the same time express a belief in sickness would have to be a prime example of an oxymoron. For it implies the impossible; it implies that part of God can be sick.

“Never underestimate the power of denial.”   …ACIM

12-29-18-Health

You have the power to deny anything you feel compelled to. You can deny God exists, that you’re a Spiritual being, or that God created you. The list is almost endless. You can also deny the possibility you can be sick. You’re blessed with that much power.

But does denying something make it true? You can deny that God exists but that doesn’t make it so, except in your own experience. You can deny you’re a Spiritual being, but only for you will it be so. By denying God created you you form  a belief that causes you to think you’re a physical being.

And denying the possibility you can be sick causes you to believe it’s true. You can become invulnerable to sickness. That’s the awesome power of the mind at work. You can direct your mind to accept sickness as a normal part of life. Or you can direct it to deny that silliness, and tell sickness it has no place in your experience. That’s why Jesus tells us to, never underestimate the power of denial.

“The body is outside you”   …ACIM

Most people believe a version of the above information. They believe the body is their home, and therefore they’re living in it, which sort of places it outside. They also believe their minds are in the brain, and therefore are limited to it. They believe it’s the brain that does all the thinking. The Course teaches differently. It says: “If you but understood the nature of thought, you could but laugh at this insane idea.”

The body is actually outside you, which means you are not in it, nor are you a part of it. How could you be in the body if you are not even in the world? It matters not what you believe about yourself, the truth is true; it always has been and it always will be.

One of the ideas which causes so much confusion and chaos in our lives is the silly idea that the truth can be different for everyone. It’s absolutely not true and hardly worth discussion. For truth is true and false is false, and never the twain shall meet.

You are not “in” the body, nor are you a “part” of it, for you are part of God. Once you can accept the idea that you’re a Spiritual Being, it’s a short jump to understanding that a physical body could never contain the majestic, unlimited and infinite fullness of your Spiritual Self. Spirit cannot ever be physical for everything physical, including the body, is temporary, and Spirit is eternal.

“To be without a body is to be in our natural state.”   …ACIM

Even though we’re convinced that this world is natural, there’s actually nothing natural about it. To be as God created us is our natural state, and He did not create us as bodies. The body is of our own making, as the Course informs us: “The idea of separation produced the body.

What is an idea except a bunch of thoughts focused on the same outcome? And if we thought about separating from God where could we go when He permeates and fills the entire universe and all the universes beyond this one? There was nowhere to go except to use the power of creation to miscreate and make an illusion. As the Course says: There is a wariness that is aroused by learning that the body is not real.”

The very fact that the body will eventually return to the nothingness from which it was made renders it unreal. It is unreal because it was made from a source of thought that has no foundation in reality. And as the Course points out,Nothing unreal exists.”

“The body‘s condition lies solely in your interpretation of its function.”   …ACIM

If we can accept the idea that the body is of our own making, then we should also be able to accept the idea that we have control over its condition. But to do this depends on, as the above quote implies, our belief in what it is and what it’s for.

And this falls back to that decision I’ve mentioned many times throughout this blog. We all must decide whether we want to see the flesh or recognize the Spirit. As the Course informs us: There is no choice in vision but this one. What you decide in this determines all you see and think is real and hold as true.”

If you see the flesh only, then in your perception the body is your reality, and therefore, your reality is at the mercy of all the negative conditions this physical environment has to offer. You have no control over its condition whatsoever.

On the other hand, if you can accept the idea that your reality may be more than a flesh body, then you’re on your way to recognizing the Spirit. You’re also on your way to realizing the body is not your reality, that it’s no more than a learning device.

All thoughts have power   …ACIM

Way back in 1910, Wallace D. Wattles wrote The Science of Getting Rich. In his book he explained why thoughts have power. He wrote: “There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.”

Therefore, if we concentrate our thoughts upon our bodies as healthy, robust and energetic they will respond to the vibrations of those thoughts. On the other hand, if we picture them as sickly, weak and tired they will respond to these vibrations as well.

I’m going to close this post with a quote from the American spiritual teacher Phineas Quimby: “It may seem strange to those in health that our beliefs affect us. The fact is, there is nothing of us but belief…  It is all that can be changed, and embraces everything man has made or ever will make”
